From my colleague and friend, Emeritus Director of The Institute of Global Leadership at Tufts University and founder of Trebuchet, Sherman Teichman: https://www.the-trebuchet.org

Dear Trebuchet Community,

I have the privilege of representing the Trebuchet, speaking at a wonderful forum at Tufts University, organized by a reincarnated version of the Institute, now transitioning into Tisch College as the Initiative for Global Leadership.

For me, it will be a homecoming since as a Strategic Adviser to the Human Rights Foundation I created the first HRF’s College Freedom Forum, inaugurated at Tufts in 2013, and for me to honor Oslo Scholars, another program I initiated for HRF in 2010/11. I will be acknowledging wonderful friends Justine Hardy and Izzeldin Abuelaish, and my alumni, Mike Niconchuk, and Garrett Friedman, important members of our community, honoring unique people of courage and healing in a time when too many are feckless, vengeful, and addicted to violence.

It will also be another journey back in time, revisiting the EPIIC symposium of thirty years ago, “The Future of Democracy.”

Below is the information about the event. We would love to have the Trebuchet Community attend the College Freedom Forum in collaboration with Tufts’ IGL symposium.

Theme: Democracy on the Brink

Where: Breed Memorial Hall

When: Feb. 28, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. + Dinner
You’re welcome to join us at any time during the event!

Hosted by the Human Rights Foundation, the event will feature some of the world’s leading voices in the struggle for freedom, including:

  • Félix Maradiaga: Nicaraguan pro-democracy advocate and former prisoner of conscience.
  • Lobsang Sangay: Former President of the Tibetan government in exile,
  • DJ Switch: Nigerian artist and #EndSARS movement activist
  • Jewher Ilham: Uyghur advocate and daughter of imprisoned scholar Ilham Tohti.
  • Hanna Liubakova: Exiled Belarusian journalist.

There will also be a reception following the event for attendees to connect with speakers.

I founded the Trebuchet in 2016 when I became the Emeritus Founding Executive Director of the Institute. Convisero, the community of the Trebuchet, was painstakingly created over the ensuing years, gathering you one by one as a community of trust. I have never previously written a mass email.  Rather, I have communicated with many of you individually over political concerns and personal human dynamics. There have been many extraordinary positive outcomes over the years of our interactions. Now, given the fraught circumstances of our world, I will be working together with you to make the community more interactive, transparent, mobilizable, and active. Our global community is extraordinarily eclectic. Our common denominator is integrity,  respect for democracy, and the rule of law, all seriously threatened at this moment, domestically and internationally.

I will soon be traveling very soon out of the country until almost the end of March, at which point I intend to create a  “Trebuchet Summit ” to think with you as a community about how we can effect the positive change that is seriously needed at this moment. I look forward to hearing from you.

Warmest regards,  Sherman
